In the Jaimini system of Vedic astrology, the planets take on personal roles called Chara Karakas — significators assigned purely by the degree each planet holds in your chart. Two of these stand out above the rest: the Atmakaraka, your soul planet, and the Darakaraka, your spouse planet. This guide explains what they are and how to read them.
What the Chara Karakas are
Take the seven planets (Sun through Saturn, and in some schools Rahu) and rank them by the degree they occupy within their sign, highest to lowest. That ranking assigns each a role — soul, minister, siblings, mother, children, enemies and spouse. Unlike fixed significators, these change from chart to chart, which makes them deeply personal.
The Atmakaraka — soul planet
The planet at the highest degree in your chart is your Atmakaraka (AK), literally the "significator of the soul." It is considered the most important planet of all — the king of the chart — and it points to your deepest desires, your core lessons, and the theme your soul is working through in this life. The nature of the planet that becomes your AK says a great deal: a Sun Atmakaraka speaks of a soul learning authority and ego; a Saturn AK, of discipline, detachment and karma; a Venus AK, of relationships, art and desire.

The Darakaraka — spouse planet
At the opposite end, the planet at the lowest degree in your chart is your Darakaraka (DK), the significator of the spouse and partnership. It describes the nature of your life partner and the kind of relationship you are drawn to. A Jupiter Darakaraka often points to a wise, principled or traditional partner; a Mars DK to an energetic, assertive one; a Mercury DK to a youthful, communicative, intellectual match.

Why the degree matters
The whole Chara Karaka scheme rests on planetary degrees, which shift within minutes of birth time. This is another reason an accurate birth time is essential — a rounded or wrong time can swap which planet becomes your Atmakaraka or Darakaraka and change the reading entirely.

The Atmakaraka and Darakaraka are a powerful pair: one shows the journey of your soul, the other the partner who walks part of that journey with you.
