Why is the 12th house used for marriage?

Because the 12th is the house of loss and surrender, and Jaimini reads marriage as the giving up of a separate self. I understand the 7th house is marriage, so I am not clear what the Upapada Lagna adds on top of it. My A7 and my 7th house seem to say different things about partnership. When the two disagree, which one does an astrologer follow?
