The Upapada Lagna (UL) is how Jaimini astrology looks at marriage: not as the 7th house from the Lagna, but as the Arudha (image) of the 12th. The 12th is loss and surrender. Marriage, in that language, is the giving up of a separate self. The image of that surrender becomes the pointer to the spouse and to the bond. It is a counterintuitive rule, and a well-established one.
This page is not a "when will I marry" post. Timing lives in dasha and in the Marriage Yoga checkers. Guna Milan, Navamsa and the Darakaraka already have their own guides. This one is the pada: how to count it, the 10th-from exception, and why the 2nd from UL sits beside the 7th in a serious reading.
Arudha of the 12th
An Arudha is a reflection. Find the house, find its lord, count the signs from the house to the lord, then count the same number again from the lord. That landing sign is the image of the house. For Upapada, the house is the 12th from the Lagna. The Arudha Lagna calculator does the same geometry for house 1 (A1). UL is A12.
Example shape: Mesha Lagna, 12th is Meena, lord Guru. If Guru sits in the 6th (Kanya), you count six signs from Meena to Kanya, then six more from Kanya - the Upapada lands in Kumbha. The Upapada Lagna calculator runs the same count on a real birth.
The 10th-from exception
If the Arudha falls in the same sign as the house, or in the 7th from it, the classical rule does not keep that landing. It jumps to the 10th sign from that Arudha. Same-sign would mean the image collapsed onto the house; 7th-from would put the image opposite it. Both are treated as invalid mirrors, so the count is moved. The Upapada Lagna calculator uses the same exception.
The 2nd from UL
Jaimini reads the 2nd house from the Upapada as the support of the marriage: food, family, the thing that lets the bond last. Benefics there are read as support; malefics ask for care and effort. That is one of the more heavily used indications in this system, and it is normally weighed before anyone talks about longevity of the marriage. It is still not a verdict on a relationship.
Beside the 7th, Navamsa and Darakaraka
The 7th house from the Lagna remains the Parashari significator of partnership. The Darakaraka - lowest-degree planet - describes the partner's temperament. Navamsa shows how the marriage matures. Upapada is the Jaimini image of the bond. Agreement among them is the strongest signal. Disagreement is a reason to read more carefully, not to pick the scariest page.
Guna Milan is a Moon-and-nakshatra filter. It does not compute UL. A full match on this site still starts at Kundli Milan, then adds the 7th, Manglik, dasha - and, in a Jaimini reading, this pada. Love or arranged and how the spouse may be are different questions again: inclination and portrait, not the Arudha of the 12th.
How to check yours
You need an exact birth time, because the 12th lord's house turns on the Lagna. Open the Upapada calculator with the same details you use on the Kundli Maker. Read the UL sign, the planets in it, and the 2nd from it. Then look at the 7th and the Darakaraka on their own pages. A chart can describe a bond. It cannot replace the two people who live it, and it is never a verdict on a marriage.
