How is the Mulank worked out?
From the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 7th, your Mulank is 7; born on the 29th, it is 2 plus 9, giving 11, then 1 plus 1, giving 2. Nothing else from the date is used, which is what distinguishes it from the Bhagyank.
What does it describe?
Your inner nature - temperament, instincts, what attracts and repels you. Ank Jyotish treats it as the self you experience from the inside rather than the one others see. Its influence is traditionally said to be present from birth but to come fully forward from about 35 onwards.

Reduce that day to a single digit from 1 to 9: born on the 29th becomes 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2; born on the 7th is simply 7. Each Mulank is linked to a planet: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.
Mulank is read as a sketch of inner temperament - instincts, likes and pace - and some numerologists say its influence is felt more clearly from the mid-thirties. The Bhagyank (Destiny Number), from the full date of birth, is a different number and speaks to the path rather than the inner style. Neither number is a medical, legal or financial forecast.
