Is Rakshasa Gana a bad thing to be?
Not at all, and the translation does the category no favours. Rakshasa Gana describes a bold, strong-willed and intense temperament - determination and drive rather than anything sinister. Nine of the 27 nakshatras fall in it, including Krittika, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha, and the tradition treats all three Ganas as equally valid natures.
How is my Gana decided?
By your Janma Nakshatra. The 27 stars are divided into three groups of nine - Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa - and your birth star places you in one. Since it depends only on the Moon's nakshatra, the birth date and an approximate time are usually enough unless the Moon was near a star boundary.
