Why are love and friendship scored separately?

What does Yoni koota actually measure?
Each nakshatra is assigned an animal symbol, and the compatibility of the two animals is read as instinctive and physical chemistry. Some pairs are natural friends, some are neutral and a few are classical enemies. It carries 4 of the 36 gunas in a full match and is one of the more colourful parts of the system.
Why does Tara get counted both ways?
Because the count is not symmetrical. Counting from one person's star to the other gives a different Tara than counting back, so the tradition checks both directions and takes the combined result. It is a small detail that is frequently skipped, and skipping it changes the score.
Can I use this for a friendship rather than a romance?
Yes, and the friendship score is built for exactly that. Gana and Tara between two birth stars read on temperament and mutual fortune, which applies as much to a business friendship or a flatmate as to a couple. Ignore the love score if it is not relevant.
How is this different from full Guna Milan?
This uses the four Nakshatra-based kootas only, so it works from birth stars alone.
