What is a vargottama planet?
A graha (or the Lagna) whose rasi in the birth chart (D1) is the same as its rasi in Navamsha (D9). In a movable sign that is the 1st navamsa, in a fixed sign the 5th, in a dual sign the 9th. The Navamsha (D9) Chart draws that whole D9 and lists vargottama in the table. Kundli Maker marks them with a box on the planet list. This page lists them with pada, dignity flavour and other-varga echoes.
Does the same sign in D10 or D12 also count as vargottama?
No. Classical vargottama is D1 and D9 only. If the D1 sign repeats in D2, D3, D7, D10, D12, D16, D30 or D60, this page lists that as an echo, not as vargottama. Repeating the sign in many vargas is useful, but it is a different question from the Navamsha test.
Does debilitated vargottama cancel neecha?
No. Neecha vargottama is mixed: the planet is weak by sign and still holds that sign in D9. Cancellation is a separate test on the Neechabhanga Raja Yoga page. Read the dasha with care rather than treating vargottama as a free pass.
How is this different from Swamsha?
Swamsha is the Navamsha sign of the Atmakaraka - the soul's D9 rasi. A planet can be vargottama without being the Atmakaraka, and the Atmakaraka can sit in Swamsha without being vargottama. The Karakamsha Chart draws the whole D9 from that sign as house 1.
How is this different from Vimsopaka Bala?
Vimsopaka Bala scores each of the seven grahas out of 20 from dignity in many vargas. Vargottama is a yes-or-no on D1 vs D9, and it includes Lagna, Rahu and Ketu. A planet can be vargottama and still score middling Vimsopaka if other vargas are unfriendly.
Why does the birth time matter, and do Rahu and Ketu count?
Each navamsa is only 3 degrees 20 minutes, so a few minutes can move a planet or the Lagna into the next pada and drop vargottama. Lagna is included because a vargottama rising sign holds in both personality and the dharma chart. Rahu and Ketu can be vargottama; they have no exaltation or debilitation on this page. What is a Vargottama planet?
Vargottama means the same rasi in the birth chart (D1) and the Navamsha (D9). Each sign of 30 degrees is cut into nine navamsas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. In a movable sign the first navamsa maps back to that sign, in a fixed sign the fifth, in a dual sign the ninth. When a graha or the Lagna sits in that pada, its D1 and D9 signs match. This page applies that test to Lagna and the nine grahas, including Rahu and Ketu.
It is not Swamsha (the Atmakaraka's D9 sign) and not the Karakamsha Chart (Navamsha counted from that sign). It is not Vimsopaka Bala, which scores dignity across many vargas out of 20. Kundli Maker already marks vargottama grahas with a box on the planet list and draws the D9 chart. Same sign in D10 or D12 is listed here as an echo, not as vargottama.
