Raja Yoga is a link between action and grace. The kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the pillars of the chart - self, home, partner, career. The trikonas (1, 5, 9) are dharma and fortune - intelligence, children, teachers. When a lord of one group joins a lord of the other, the classics named the combination Raja Yoga: capacity for status, not a throne and not a promise of fame.
That is a different question from what a yoga means. That page is the general idea - presence, strength, dasha. This page is the specific rule: which houses count, which planet is a yoga karaka, and why six Lagnas get one while the other six do not. It is also not the Nitya Yoga of the Panchang - that daily Sun-plus-Moon count is the Janma Yoga guide. To see the kendra–trikona links in a real chart, use the Raj Yog calculator.
Kendras and trikonas
A kendra lord is a planet that rules the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Lagna. A trikona lord rules the 1st, 5th or 9th. The 1st house sits in both lists, which is why the Lagna lord is so heavy - and why it cannot be allowed to mint a yoga karaka by itself. If house 1 counted toward both sides of the rule, every rising sign would have a yogakaraka. The engine on this site therefore looks for a kendra among 4, 7 or 10 and a trikona among 5 or 9. House 1 is left out of both tests.
The twelve houses guide is the map of what each bhava rules. Here the only grouping that matters is kendra versus trikona. Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are a different geometry - that is Vipreet Raja Yoga, the reverse case, not a substitute for this one.
The yoga karaka
A yoga karaka is one planet that already owns both a kendra (4, 7 or 10) and a trikona (5 or 9). The yoga is then the planet, not a meeting. Its own Mahadasha is when that Raja Yoga is timed, peaking in its own Antardasha. Only six Lagnas have one:
| Lagna | Yoga karaka | Houses |
|---|---|---|
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | Shani (Saturn) | 9th and 10th |
| Karka (Cancer) | Mangal (Mars) | 5th and 10th |
| Simha (Leo) | Mangal (Mars) | 4th and 9th |
| Tula (Libra) | Shani (Saturn) | 4th and 5th |
| Makara (Capricorn) | Shukra (Venus) | 5th and 10th |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | Shukra (Venus) | 4th and 9th |
The other six rising signs - Mesha, Mithuna, Kanya, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Meena - have no yogakaraka. Dual signs often look as if they should. For Mithuna, Guru owns the 7th and the 10th: two kendras. That is not a yoga karaka. The planet never owns the 5th or the 9th. The same trap appears for Kanya, Dhanu and Meena with Budha or Guru doubling up on angles. Two pillars without a trikona are still two pillars.
Pick a Lagna. Peach houses are kendras, rose houses are trikonas, gold is both (the 1st). Lord initials sit on those houses.
Yoga karaka: Shani (Saturn)
Vrishabha Lagna. Rules the 9th and 10th.
Saturn owns both the 9th and the 10th, so Dharma–Karmadhipati is this one planet.
A teaching map of house lords, not a reading of your chart. It does not place planets. Check a real Kundli on the Raj Yog calculator.
Dharma–Karmadhipati
Among raja yogas, the 9th lord joined to the 10th lord is the one the tradition ranks highest: fortune (dharma) pulling with career (karma). That is Dharma–Karmadhipati Yoga. For Vrishabha Lagna the two houses share a lord - Saturn owns Capricorn as the 9th and Aquarius as the 10th - so the yoga karaka is also this named yoga in a single planet. No other Lagna gets that overlap. Kumbha’s yoga karaka is Venus (4th and 9th), not Saturn; Saturn there is the Lagna lord and the 12th lord.
Every other rising sign still forms Dharma–Karmadhipati the ordinary way: the 9th lord and the 10th lord by conjunction, mutual aspect, or parivartana (sign exchange). The picker above only flags the same-lord case. Two planets meeting is a chart fact, not a Lagna fact, so it belongs on the calculator, not on this map.
Other ways a Raja Yoga forms
When there is no yogakaraka, Raja Yoga is still possible. Any kendra lord joined to any trikona lord by conjunction, mutual aspect, or exchange counts. That is the general recipe the Kendra–Trikona Raja Yoga page isolates, and the set the Raj Yog calculator lists in full. One clean link is a hint. Several clean links are a pattern. A single weak pair is common and should not be read as a coronation.
Two cousins are easy to mix up. Vipreet Raja Yoga is dusthana lords occupying dusthanas - a rise that often follows struggle, not a kendra–trikona link. Neechabhanga Raja Yoga is cancellation of debilitation that can behave like a raja yoga when the cancelling planet is strong. Neither replaces the yoga karaka. Run those checkers when that is the question you brought.
Why a yoga on paper still needs dasha and dignity
Three questions, in this order - the same order as in the yoga-meaning guide, applied here:
- Does it form? Either a yogakaraka exists for this Lagna, or two lords actually join. “Almost” is not a yoga.
- Are the planets strong? Exaltation, own sign, a good house, freedom from combustion. Mars as yoga karaka for Karka is a different Mars from Mars debilitated in Karka and combust. A title without an army does not march.
- Is it running? A yogakaraka gives its Raja Yoga in its own Mahadasha, peaking in svabhukti. A kendra–trikona pair ripens in the dashas of those two lords. A splendid yoga in a decade that has nothing to do with them can sit quiet for thirty years. That is the clock, not a failure.
This is why two people can share Saturn as yoga karaka and live different lives, and why the calculator grades strength instead of printing a medal. Presence is common. A strong, well-timed instance is less so.
How to check yours
You need an exact birth time, because the Lagna - and therefore every house lord - turns on the ascendant. Find the rising sign on the Ascendant calculator or the Kundli Maker, then run the Raj Yog page. Read the yogakaraka line first, then the list of kendra–trikona links, then the dasha dates on the Janma Mahadasha timeline. If the 9th and 10th are the pair you care about, open Dharma–Karmadhipati as well.
A chart describes a capacity and a season. It does not replace work, character, or professional advice. Raja Yoga is a good name for a good combination. It is a poor name for a guaranteed life.
