In a Kundli, a yoga is a combination: two or more planets, houses or signs arranged in a way the classical texts named because they had seen it produce a recognisable kind of life. It is not a stretching pose, and it is not a certificate. "You have Gaja Kesari Yoga" means Jupiter and the Moon stand in a particular relationship. It does not mean the person will be famous. Fame is a possible reading of a strong, well-timed instance of that yoga - not the yoga's legal name.
The kinds you will meet on this site
Raja yogas link kendras (action) with trikonas (grace) - typically a kendra lord joined to a trikona lord. They describe a capacity for status, not a throne. The Raja Yoga guide names the yoga karaka for each Lagna and the 9th–10th special case. The Raj Yog calculator looks for several of those links at once, because one swallow is not a summer.
Dhana yogas connect the 2nd and 11th, or Jupiter and Venus, in ways that describe a flow of money. Again: flow, not a lottery. A dhana yoga in a chart whose 6th house is in chaos often means money that is busy paying debts.
Naabhasa (Sankhya) yogas are a different family. They count how many signs the seven planets occupy - one sign (Gola), two (Yuga), three (Shoola), and so on. They describe the shape of the whole chart, not a single topic. A Gola yoga (everything in one sign) is rare and intense; a Damini yoga (six signs occupied) is spread out and often versatile. These are weather systems, not job titles.
Named yogas such as Gaja Kesari, Budhaditya or Pancha Mahapurusha each have a page because the rule is specific enough to check. Use those pages to see whether the combination is present. Use the rest of the chart to see whether it can breathe. The daily Nitya Yoga of the Panchang is a different use of the same English word - Sun plus Moon, not a house combination.
Presence, strength, and time
Three questions, in this order:
- Does it form? The rule is either met or it is not. "Almost" is not a yoga.
- Are the planets involved strong? Exaltation, own sign, kendra, lack of combustion, support from benefics. A raja yoga whose lords are debilitated and combust is a title without an army.
- Is it running? Yogas ripen in the dasha of the planets that make them. A splendid yoga in a Saturn–Rahu decade that has nothing to do with those lords can sit quiet for thirty years. That is not failure. That is the clock.
This is why two people can share a yoga and live different lives, and why a calculator that only says "forms / does not form" is a starting point. The honest next sentence is always about dignity and dasha.
What a yoga does not do
It does not override medicine, law, or the need to apply for the job. It does not cancel a dosha by existing in the same chart - cancellation has its own rules, and they are narrower than people hope. It does not mean the opposite yoga cannot also be present. Charts are allowed to be mixed. A raja yoga and a daridra yoga in one Kundli is a common picture of someone who rises in public and still feels money-tight at home, or the reverse in different decades.
