It is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology — a 120-year cycle in which each of nine planets rules a stretch of your life in a fixed order. Understanding it is the key to moving from a static chart to real prediction. This guide explains how the system works and how to read your own periods.
What "Dasha" means
A Dasha is a planetary period — a span of time governed by a particular planet. During its Dasha, a planet acts like the manager of your life: the areas it rules and influences in your chart come to the foreground, for better or worse. Vimshottari (literally "one hundred and twenty") divides a notional full lifespan of 120 years among the nine planets.
The order and length of the periods
Each planet's Mahadasha (major period) has a fixed length, and they always run in the same sequence:
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
These add up to 120 years. The cycle then repeats. Which planet's Dasha you are born into, and how far along it is at birth, is decided by the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon occupied at birth — each Nakshatra is ruled by one of these nine planets.
Mahadasha and Antardasha
Each Mahadasha is subdivided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), one for each planet, in the same Vimshottari order, starting with the Mahadasha lord itself. So during your Jupiter Mahadasha you will pass through Jupiter–Jupiter, Jupiter–Saturn, Jupiter–Mercury, and so on. The sub-period length is proportional to the planets' Dasha years, so a Jupiter–Saturn period is longer than a Jupiter–Sun period.
The result read at any moment is a blend of the Mahadasha lord and the Antardasha lord. A benefic major period can still bring a difficult stretch during the sub-period of a malefic, and vice versa. Astrologers often go one level deeper still — the Pratyantar Dasha — to time events to within weeks.
How to judge a period
To read what a Dasha will bring, look at the planet in your birth chart and ask:
- Which houses does it rule? Those areas of life activate.
- Which house does it sit in, and with whom? That is where its energy is spent.
- Is it strong or afflicted? A dignified, well-placed planet gives good results in its period; a debilitated or badly-placed one gives mixed or difficult ones.
- Is it a functional benefic or malefic for your ascendant? The same planet helps one ascendant and troubles another.
For example, if Venus rules your 10th (career) and 5th (creativity) houses and sits well placed, a Venus Mahadasha can be a career high point, especially in fields tied to art, luxury or relationships. If Saturn rules difficult houses and is afflicted, its 19-year period may demand patience and hard work before rewards arrive.

Other Dasha systems
Vimshottari is the default, but it is not the only timing system. Yogini Dasha is a shorter 36-year cycle many astrologers use as a second opinion, and sign-based systems like Char Dasha (from the Jaimini tradition) time events by rashi rather than planet.
