How can a sign rule a period instead of a planet?
That is the core idea of Jaimini. In Chara Dasha the twelve rashis take turns, and the events of a period are read from that sign - its lord, the planets in it, and the Jaimini karakas placed there. It is a genuinely different framework from Vimshottari rather than a variation of it.
Why do the periods have such uneven lengths?
Because the length is counted from each sign to its own lord, which can be anywhere from one to twelve signs away. An exalted lord adds a year and a debilitated one removes a year. For Scorpio and Aquarius, which have two lords each, the K.N. Rao method takes the stronger of the pair.
What makes a Lagna odd-footed or even-footed?
It is a Jaimini classification that decides the direction of travel. Odd-footed ascendants run the dasha in zodiacal order, even-footed ones run it in reverse. Getting this wrong reverses your whole timeline, which is one reason Chara Dasha results differ between software that uses different conventions.
Should I trust Chara Dasha or Vimshottari when they disagree?
Neither on its own. Experienced astrologers use Chara Dasha as a cross-check: when both systems point at the same period for the same kind of event, the timing is held with far more confidence. When they disagree, the honest reading is that the timing is uncertain, and Vimshottari usually keeps the benefit of the doubt because it is more widely tested.
How much does birth time accuracy matter here?
More than usual, because the whole sequence starts from the Lagna. If the ascendant is wrong the starting sign is wrong, and the entire timeline shifts along with the odd or even-footed direction. A chart with an uncertain birth time is not a good candidate for Chara Dasha. The Moon-star timeline most people start with is Vimshottari Mahadasha. The tantric 36-year cycle is Yogini Dasha. Is this the same as Chara Karaka?
No. Chara Karakas are the planets ranked by degree, used as Jaimini significators of soul, career and spouse. Chara Dasha is the timing system: the twelve rashis take turns from the Lagna. About Chara Dasha Calculator
Chara Dasha is the main dasha of Jaimini astrology. Periods are ruled by the twelve rashis, not by planets. The sequence starts from the Lagna: odd-footed lagnas run the signs in zodiacal order, even-footed lagnas in reverse. Each sign's length is counted from the sign to its lord (1 to 12 years), with an extra year for exaltation and one year less for debilitation. Vrishchika and Kumbha use the stronger co-lord (K.N. Rao method).
Events are read from the running sign, its lord and the Jaimini karakas in it. Because the dasha begins from Lagna, birth time matters more than in Moon-based systems - the ascendant changes about every two hours. Pick the city from the dropdown so coordinates and timezone are correct.
