How is this different from Chara Dasha?
Both are Jaimini rashi dashas, but they are not the same method. Chara Dasha (K.N. Rao) always starts from the Lagna and uses odd-footed versus even-footed signs for direction. Narayana Dasha starts from the stronger of Lagna and the 7th, and uses odd versus even signs. Astrologers often read Narayana for outer events and career, and Chara as a general Jaimini timeline.
Why can the cycle start from the 7th instead of Lagna?
Narayana Dasha treats Lagna and the 7th as a pair: the self and the other, the inner seat and the outer world. The seed is the stronger of those two signs, judged first by how many planets sit there, then by Jaimini rashi aspects onto the sign, then by the dignity of that sign's lord. A remaining tie keeps Lagna. That is why two charts with the same Lagna can still open on different first dashas.
Does a career-themed dasha mean I will change jobs?
No. The reading frames the period as if that rashi were Lagna, so the 10th from it is the career house for those years - a lens, not a guarantee. A strong 10th can still be a quiet stretch, and a weak one can still bring a title if transits and Vimshottari agree. Treat this as one timing layer and keep decisions with a manager, a counsellor, or a qualified astrologer.
What does the 10th from the dasha rashi show?
In this method the running sign is read as a temporary Lagna. The 10th from it is the period's house of status, public work and career shifts. The calculator names that sign on the timeline so you can judge its lord and occupants on the Kundli Maker chart, rather than treating the dasha name alone as the whole story.
Odd and even signs - is that the same as odd-footed?
No, and mixing them reverses the timeline. Odd signs here are Mesha, Mithuna, Simha, Tula, Dhanu and Kumbha (they run forward). Even signs run in reverse. Odd-footed versus even-footed is a different Jaimini grouping used in K.N. Rao Chara Dasha, where Mesha, Vrishabha and Mithuna are odd-footed together. This page uses odd/even only.
How much does birth time accuracy matter here?
A great deal, because the seed is Lagna or the 7th, both of which rest on the ascendant. If the Lagna is wrong, the 7th is wrong, the strength contest is wrong, and the whole sequence shifts. A chart with an uncertain birth time is not a good candidate for Narayana Dasha. Cross-check with Vimshottari Mahadasha (Moon-star based) and Yogini Dasha. For sudden leaps rather than a walk through the signs, use Mandooka Dasha.

Narayana Dasha is a Jaimini rashi dasha used for external events - career shifts, status, public life and worldly turning points. Periods are ruled by the twelve rashis. The cycle starts from the stronger of Lagna and the 7th house (occupants first, then Jaimini rashi aspects, then lord dignity). Odd signs run the sequence forward; even signs run it in reverse. Each sign's years are counted from the sign to its lord (1 to 12), with +1 for exaltation and -1 for debilitation. Vrishchika and Kumbha use the stronger co-lord.
During a dasha, that rashi is read as if it were Lagna. Career and public standing sit in the 10th from the dasha sign. Because the seed is Lagna or 7th, birth time matters: the ascendant changes about every two hours. Pick the city from the dropdown so coordinates and timezone are correct.
This is not Vimshottari and not K.N. Rao Chara Dasha (that one always starts from Lagna and uses odd-footed vs even-footed signs). For sudden leaps that skip signs, use Mandooka Dasha.
