What is Nadi Dosha?

Nadi is the eighth and most heavily weighted factor (koota) in Vedic Ashtakoot Guna Milan for marriage, carrying 8 of the 36 gunas. Each person's Nadi — Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) or Antya (Kapha) — is decided by the Janma Nakshatra of the Moon, with the 27 nakshatras split into three groups of nine.

Nadi Dosha arises when both partners fall in the same Nadi. Because Nadi is tied to the bio-energy (humor) and to health and progeny, sharing the same Nadi is traditionally seen as unfavourable, and the Nadi koota then scores 0 out of 8. Of the three, Madhya Nadi dosha is regarded as the most serious.

Classical texts also give Parihara (cancellation) rules that nullify the dosha — for example, the same Nakshatra with different Padas, the same Rashi with different Nakshatras, the same Nakshatra in different Rashis, or friendly lords of the two Moon signs.
