What exactly is an Istha Devta?

How does the Karakamsa method work?

Three steps. Why do different astrologers give me different deities?

Because the method has genuine variations. Some take the planet in the 12th from Karakamsa, others its lord or an aspecting planet; the planet-to-deity mapping also differs between teachers, and each planet has several associated forms. Treat any single result as a suggestion and give weight to your guru or family tradition.

What if I already worship a deity I feel close to?

Then stay with them. Every tradition holds that a genuine devotional connection outranks a calculated one, and no teacher would ask someone to abandon a deity they love because a chart suggested another. Read this as an additional door, not a correction.

Why does the birth time matter so much here?

Because the whole calculation runs through the Navamsa, where each sign lasts only about three and a half degrees of the Rashi chart. A small error in the birth time can move the Karakamsa into the next sign and change the answer completely. If your time is uncertain, treat the result as provisional.

How is this different from the Vimshamsha chart?

The calculator names an Ishta Devata I have no family connection to, while I have worshipped Ganesha at home since childhood. Am I supposed to change what I do, or does the Ishta Devata mean something different from the deity one simply loves and prays to daily?
