Arvind Raghavan ( Name Changed for Privacy )
The calculator names an Ishta Devata I have no family connection to, while I have worshipped Ganesha at home since childhood. Am I supposed to change what I do, or does the Ishta Devata mean something different from the deity one simply loves and prays to daily?
Namaste Arvind,
Please be completely assured: you do not need to change your worship or leave Lord Ganesha. In Vedic thought and classical philosophy, heartfelt devotion (bhakti and shraddha) always stands above mathematical formulas. The bond of love, reverence, and daily connection you have nurtured with Lord Ganesha since childhood is your true spiritual anchor, and abandoning a beloved deity because of a chart calculation is neither required nor advised.
In Jyotish and traditional practice, these concepts serve different roles:
1. Your Upasana / Bhakti Devata:
The form of the Divine to whom your heart naturally turns in prayer, gratitude, and daily life (in your case, Lord Ganesha).
2. Kula Devata:
The guardian deity of your family lineage and ancestral roots.
3. Astrological Ishta Devata:
A classical calculation (usually derived from the 12th house from the Atmakaraka in the Navamsa chart via Jaimini principles) that points specifically toward the archetypal energy guiding the soul's liberation (moksha).
In your chart, with Makara Lagna, Ketu in the 12th house (Dhanu), and Mercury in the 1st house in a mutual exchange (Parivartana) with 9th lord Saturn, worshipping Lord Ganesha is already exceptionally harmonizing. Ganesha rules the subtle spiritual qualities of Ketu and the intellect of Mercury, helping steady the mind and remove obstacles during your current planetary cycles.
Continue your daily prayers, aarti, and simple connection to Lord Ganesha with full faith and peace of mind. If you ever wish to acknowledge the deity suggested by the calculation, you may simply offer a respectful mental namaskar, but let your daily devotion remain exactly where your heart has always placed it.
