Why is my Rashi different from the sign I always thought I was?

Two reasons, often together. Most people know their Western Sun sign, while the Rashi is the Moon sign - a different planet entirely. My Moon sign here comes out as Karka, but the newspaper horoscope I have followed for years puts me in Mithuna. I have been reading the wrong forecast my whole life it seems. Which one should I actually be following, and why do the two systems disagree?
